Les Miserables in Song

Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, Les Miserables captures in song the harrowing tale of right and wrong, love and loss, and the tumultous time of war in Revolutionary France. With powerful songs and equally masterful performers, the plot is adapted into a musical that has been much loved for over 20 years.

The musical begins as Jean Valjean is released from nineteens years in prison for stealing bread to stave off starvation by the police inspector Javert, who issues him a parole ticket he is to present for employment. Valjean quickly realizes that no onel sees him as an equal citizen and decides to break parole and begin a new life elsewhere. READ MORE »

Billy Elliot The Musical consists of a gripping story that explores the relationship between the strife of the working class and the desires of a child trapped by circumstance. The show consists of two acts. The music is done by Sir Elton John. The story was written by Lee Hall and is set during the coal strike of 1984 which lasted until 1985.

Billy is a boy raised by his coal miner father and brothers while the family is embroiled in the consequences of an active miner’s strike. Billy stops attending boxing lessons in favor of ballet lessons. READ MORE »

Chicago: The Musical

Chicago: The Musical is based on the original play, also named Chicago, created in 1926 by Maurine Dallas Watkins. Watkins created the original Chicago after reporting on the murder trials of Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. The character Roxie Hart is based on Annan who was accused of killing Harry Kalstedt on April 3, 1924. Her defense was that she killed him because he ?tried to make love to her.? Velma Kelly is based on Gaertner, a cabaret singer who was on trial for the murder of Walter Law. Annan was found not guilty in May and Gaertner was acquitted shortly after in June of the same year. The articles profiling these cases became so popular that Watkins decided to create a play, which ran for 172 performances and even reached Broadway. READ MORE »
